Our lighthouse sculpture trail is ending – but it isn’t over yet!
Come and join us for the Guiding Lights Farewell Weekend from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 September at Market Hall, Devonport, Plymouth PL1 4PS
All 92 lighthouses, large and small, will be displayed together for one final time. Clock up any you’ve missed on the app, meet some of the artists and snap up raffle tickets to win the fantastic Night Light sculpture by Lucy Hebden.
At the Grand Auction on Thursday 1 October, the large and medium-sized lighthouses go under the hammer at the University of Plymouth. Bid in person or online and give your favourite sculpture a forever home. Register for the event.
Every penny of profit from Guiding Lights will support the compassionate end of life care provided by St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth for local families.

A Wild in Art Event
Working in partnership with Wild in Art, this colourful and exciting art trail will engage local communities, schools and businesses, and bring thousands of visitors into the city. All the while raising awareness of St Luke’s and the importance of the care we provide.
Wild in Art is the leading producer of spectacular public art events which enrich, entertain, inform and connect communities – giving people of all ages a voice through art.
Why lighthouses?
The lighthouse theme was selected for its symbolic relevance and its strong link to Plymouth’s maritime history and Smeaton’s Tower on the Hoe. Lighthouses traditionally provide a guiding light for those who are weathering stormy seas and searching for safety, and this echoes what St Luke’s offers our patients and their loved ones, helping them find their way in times of great difficulty and uncertainty.
Seeing our organisation as a guiding light also fits in well with St Luke’s commitment to shine a beacon of compassion across Plymouth and the surrounding area, not only supporting and advising patients and families, but also liaising with and guiding other health and care professionals to make sure everyone has the best end of life support possible.
Auction for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth
After being on show to the public for 10 weeks, the lighthouse sculptures will find their permanent homes when they go under the hammer at a grand auction finale. The Guiding Lights auction takes place on 1 October at the Rolle Marquee, University of Plymouth, when the large and roaming sculptures will be sold to the highest bidders. All profits from the sales will go directly to fund the compassionate care St Luke’s delivers in people’s own homes and at the hospice’s specialist unit at Turnchapel.

How Lighthouses support St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth
Lighthouses are navigators for those who are weathering stormy seas. The first lighthouse built on the treacherous Eddystone Rock, was a pioneering project, just as St Luke’s has been a trailblazer for hospice care in Plymouth, Southwest Devon and East Cornwall. We put our patients first, delivering care in their homes and at our specialist unit at Turnchapel and shine the spotlight on encouraging conversations around death, dying and bereavement.

Art Trail & Auction in aid of St Luke's Hospice coming to Plymouth 6th July – 13th September
Our Grand Auction is being hosted by the University of Plymouth at the Rolle Marquee on Thursday 1 October.
Professor Richard Davies, Vice-Chancellor of the @plymuni said:
"St Luke`s plays a vital role in Plymouth’s community. Every year, the hospice offers care and support to thousands of people with life-limiting illnesses and their families at exceptionally difficult times in their lives.
“I am immensely proud of the University’s connection to the charity, with several of our graduates now working in hospice roles that make a difference every single day, in addition to our staff and students undertaking a variety of impactful research projects connected to palliative and end of life care.
“Hosting the St Luke’s Guiding Lights auction is an extension of that relationship. The lighthouses have illuminated our city’s streets this summer and created an inspiring art trail that has been enjoyed by local residents and visitors alike. I hope that will now lead to a successful auction that supports @stlukesplymouth work now and into the future.”

Children from Laira Green Primary School ventured out to @theboxplymouth in search of their Little Light. They had a marvelous time seeing all the other school and community group lighthouses and exploring the various exhibitions at the museum.
Having their work on display among so many artifacts and artworks was a super proud moment for all. We loved how the teaching team connected it with learning about community and what it means. People working together for a common goal, building up a sense or belonging and greater good.

Star dedications have reopened for our special in-memory lighthouse which is currently standing proudly in Mount Batten. Once the Farewell Weekend is over, the empty stars will be carefully sanded back to add the name of your loved one and then varnished to protect them for years to come.

The inspiration for this lighthouse design comes from the amazing experience of swimming in an outdoor lido — a place of light, calm, and clarity. The pool represents my happy place, where water and reflection create a sense of freedom and peace. This sculpture captures that feeling of serenity and openness, symbolising how water can clear the mind and illuminate the spirit, much like a lighthouse guiding the way.
💙 This joyful beacon will be making waves for @stlukesplymouth at our Grand Auction on 1st October at The Rolle Marquee, University of Plymouth @plymuni.
