St Luke’s Guiding Lights

Beaming with pride!

Our Art Trail is open now and runs until Sunday 13 September 2026

St Luke’s Guiding Lights is now shining across Plymouth, bringing a spectacular trail of stunning lighthouse sculptures to Britain’s Ocean City. More than 40 beautifully designed lighthouse sculptures are guiding visitors on a magical journey through the city’s streets and waterfront until 13 September.

As you explore Plymouth, you’ll discover one striking lighthouse after another, each transformed by talented local and regional artists and proudly sponsored by local businesses. Find out more about the Art Trail and our interactive app here.

Alongside the excitement of the trail, Guiding Lights has a much deeper purpose: raising vital funds and awareness for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. Every lighthouse helps support the expert end of life care St Luke’s provides for patients and their families across Plymouth, West Devon, Dartmoor and the South Hams.

The project was launched last year with the unveiling of the trail’s first full-size lighthouse, a vibrant tribute to Plymouth and its people created by celebrated artist and St Luke’s patron Brian Pollard. It was joined by a smaller sea-inspired lighthouse designed by popular local mural artist Mrs Murals, which travelled across the community inspiring supporters and budding artists ahead of the trail.

Hundreds of artists submitted designs to transform blank lighthouse sculptures into imaginative works of art. Following a rigorous selection process, an experienced panel shortlisted the designs before sponsors and the Guiding Lights team made the final choices for this summer’s trail.

Once the trail comes to an end in September, the sculptures will take centre stage at a grand auction finale, where they will go under the hammer to raise even more funds for St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth.

Why lighthouses?

The lighthouse theme was selected for its symbolic relevance and its strong link to Plymouth’s maritime history and Smeaton’s Tower on the Hoe. Lighthouses traditionally provide a guiding light for those who are weathering stormy seas and searching for safety, and this echoes what St Luke’s offers our patients and their loved ones, helping them find their way in times of great difficulty and uncertainty.

Seeing our organisation as a guiding light also fits in well with St Luke’s commitment to shine a beacon of compassion across Plymouth and the surrounding area, not only supporting and advising patients and families, but also liaising with and guiding other health and care professionals to make sure everyone has the best end of life support possible.

How Lighthouses support St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth

Lighthouses are navigators for those who are weathering stormy seas. The first lighthouse built on the treacherous Eddystone Rock, was a pioneering project, just as St Luke’s has been a trailblazer for hospice care in Plymouth, Southwest Devon and East Cornwall. We put our patients first, delivering care in their homes and at our specialist unit at Turnchapel and shine the spotlight on encouraging conversations around death, dying and bereavement.
