First newsletter

Hello and welcome to the very first edition of the St Luke’s Guiding Lights newsletter! We are thrilled to introduce you to this exciting art trail and auction, which is set to bring our community together in support of St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth. In partnership with internationally renowned creative producers Wild in Art, this project will inspire and engage people of all ages, bridge community gaps, and raise vital funds for our hospice.

On Tuesday 13 May, we hosted the long-awaited launch event, by unveiling the first two sculptures of the project; a stunning, full-sized lighthouse sculpture, beautifully designed and painted by the renowned Brian Pollard, alongside our smaller, travelling lighthouse featuring a striking ‘Smeaton’s Tower’ theme, expertly brought to life by the talented Mrs Murals.

Artists

At our launch event we had an opportunity to share a Q&A session with our talented launch artists Brian Pollard and Mrs Murals. They shared insights into their creative processes, what inspires them, and what it feels like to be part of such a meaningful project. We can’t thank them enough for their dedication and the beautiful pieces they’ve contributed to kick off the St Luke’s Guiding Lights project in style!

Guess what: Our Artist Call Out is now LIVE, and we are seeking local, regional, established, and emerging artists to design one of our large lighthouse sculptures.

This is an opportunity for artists to showcase their vision! Their work will be recognised across all printed material, including the sculpture plaque, official trail map, website, and mobile app and if their design is selected, they will receive an honorarium of £1,000 upon completion of their artwork.

The beautiful ending to this story, is that, after the trail concludes, these one-of-a-kind sculptures will be auctioned off, raising vital funds for St Luke’s. This art trail is more than just a celebration of creativity – it’s an opportunity to bring art and community together for a truly meaningful cause.

Note: The deadline for receipt of submissions is by midnight on Monday 27 October 2025.

Let’s make 2026 a year to remember by creating something that enriches lives, strengthens our community, and makes a real difference.

Schools

A huge well done and thank you to all the organisations that have signed up to join our ‘Little Lights’ Programme and secured their place early.

Since the trail was launched on 13 May, we have seen an overwhelming surge of sign-ups! We’re excited to work with these schools and look forward to seeing the creativity of the young people shine through in the ‘Little Light’ sculptures, which will be displayed at our school exhibition next summer.

We are sure local students and their families will really enjoy taking part in the trail in 2026, and we encourage families to get out in the fresh air, promoting health and wellbeing, and creating a sense of pride in our communities.

The Little Lights Programme is not only an opportunity for local students to get involved in the art trail but also a chance to raise awareness of St Luke’s and spark conversations about death and dying in a sensitive, age-appropriate way.
