October Newsletter

Date published: 6 November 2025

October has been a wonderfully busy and exciting month for the Guiding Lights Project team! The closing date for artist submissions brought a flurry of last-minute entries, and we were thrilled to receive an astonishing number of applications. It’s a true testament to the incredible depth of talent we have here in the Southwest — and beyond — from artists eager to be part of this inspiring project.

Mrs Mural’s Little Lukey and Brian Pollard’s Tower have also been out and about this month, making special guest appearances at the Devon Business Show. Both lighthouses attracted plenty of admiration from stallholders and visitors alike.

As we head into November and the festive season draws near, our sights are already set on 2026 — the year of the sculpture trail! The team is hard at work planning a host of exciting events and activities leading up to the big launch next year. Stay tuned — all will be revealed in due course!

Artists

Our artist open call is now officially closed; we would like to take this opportunity to say a huge THANK YOU to all the talented artists who submitted their lighthouse sculpture designs. We’ve been truly blown away by the creativity, quality, and passion that shines through each and every submission.

We know how much time and effort goes into creating these designs, and we’re incredibly grateful for the dedication you’ve shown.

Next, our expert panel will carefully review all entries and select the designs that will move forward to the next stage. We’re excited to take this next step and look forward to sharing more with you soon!

Schools

We’ve really enjoyed taking Little Lukey Lighthouse on his adventures to visit the wonderful schools taking part in our project! We have been so impressed by how the children have listened with respect, empathy, and compassion, asking thoughtful questions and showing such a keen interest in helping us raise funds.

It’s been truly heart-warming to see their enthusiasm — some children have even come up to tell us they’re planning a 5 km run, while others have sought out their teachers later in the day to discuss their own fundraising ideas. Moments like these remind us how powerful kindness and community spirit can be.

We’re so grateful to all the schools, staff, and their outstanding children for their enthusiasm and support.

Our littlest learners at the nurseries have been busy painting lighthouse pictures, and we even enjoyed singing a special lighthouse song — complete with actions!

In other news, the partnership with our production provider PL1 Events has been growing from strength to strength with lots of planning happening behind the scenes for 2026. We can’ thank them enough for helping us bring the project to life!
